Your pathway depends on where you trained. The April 2025 streamlined pathway significantly reduces requirements for nurses from comparable jurisdictions.
No NCLEX or OSCE required
For nurses from comparable jurisdictions with 1,800+ hours practice since 1 January 2017.
Timeline: 1-3 months | No exam fees
NCLEX-RN + OSCE required
For nurses from non-comparable jurisdictions. Must pass both the NCLEX-RN (MCQ) and OSCE (clinical) exams.
Timeline: 9-12 months | NCLEX ~$530 AUD + OSCE $4,000 AUD
Writing scores have been reduced across all tests. Cambridge English (C1/C2) is now accepted.

Nurses from comparable jurisdictions (UK, Ireland, USA, Canada BC/ON, Singapore, Spain) with 1,800+ hours practice since 1 January 2017 no longer need to sit the NCLEX-RN or OSCE. Registration timeline reduced from 9-12 months to 1-3 months. You still need to meet English language requirements and provide a Certificate of Good Standing.
If you trained in a comparable jurisdiction AND have 1,800+ hours since 2017, you may qualify for the streamlined pathway (no exams). Otherwise, Stream B nurses must pass both: the NCLEX-RN (85-150 MCQ, computer adaptive, via Pearson VUE worldwide) and the OSCE (10 clinical stations at $4,000 AUD, held monthly in Adelaide or Melbourne).
Key costs: AHPRA application ~$300 AUD, annual registration $193 AUD. Stream B exam costs: NCLEX-RN ~$530 AUD (USD $350), OSCE $4,000 AUD per sitting. English test fees vary ($300-400 AUD). Stream A streamlined pathway: no exam fees. Skills assessment via ANMAC may apply separately.
From March 2025, writing scores were reduced: IELTS Academic 7.0/7.0/7.0/6.5 (writing reduced from 7.0), OET B/B/B/C+ (writing reduced from B), PTE 65/65/65/58 (writing reduced from 65). Cambridge C1/C2 is now accepted. Two test sittings within 12 months can be combined. Education pathway: 5 years full-time English-medium education in a recognised country is an alternative.
Stream A (streamlined): 1-3 months. Stream B (OBA with NCLEX + OSCE): 9-12 months. The main variable is OSCE scheduling — held monthly in Adelaide and Melbourne with limited spots. We recommend starting English test preparation immediately while awaiting AHPRA assessment.
Most international nurses enter on a 482 Temporary Skill Shortage visa (employer-sponsored, up to 4 years) then transition to a 186 permanent visa. Regional 494 visas offer a pathway via subclass 191. Working Holiday visas (417/462) are available for some countries (UK, Ireland, Canada, Philippines, India — age 18-30). Nursing is on the skilled occupation list.
